Susa Monteiro’s illustrations are imbued with a poignant melancholia, her line an expression of an innate sadness that whispers between the lines and shadows of her pictures.
It is the silence in Monteiro’s illustrations that evokes the immense sadness in her drawings, her figures dissolute, hunched to the world, broken and scared, fated to live out a life of existential angst. With an assured line and a rare ability to evoke a depth of feeling with a minimal line, Monteiro has a direct connection to a well of emotion that she draws upon every time she picks up a pen.
Monteiro is also an accomplished comic artist – but it’s hard to find good quality images of her work online – and it’s in the dark pages of her comic world that she truly conjures up a storm of sorrow in a landscape punctuated by the harsh Atlantic winds and low ominous skies of her native Portugal.
