Alice Wellinger’s illustrations transcend time, their surreal aesthetic drawing on the paintings of the Belgian Surrealist painter René Magritte and naive folk art.
Originally a graphic designer Wellinger turned to illustration after the birth of her children and it’s her experience as a mother that pervades her pictures, the subject matter revolving around daily life and childhood memories. What makes Wellinger’s illustrations extraordinary is that her work is deeply personal despite being commissions for various newspapers and magazines. It’s as if she’s managed to find a way to underpin her commercial work with a personal conviction and emotional depth that is separate from the subject being illustrated. Here’s what she has to say about her work:
I always try to tell a little story in my pictures – I like when people have something to think about.
